Rafael Guastavino, valenciano de nacimiento acabó emigrando a los EEUU. Afincado en Barcelona desde 1861, donde estudió en la Escuela de Maestros de Obras, cinco años después firmaba sus primeras obras, entre las que destaca el Teatro de La Massa en Vilasar de Dalt.
Pronto, en 1881, cruzaría el Atlántico junto a su hijo, y se instalarían en Nueva York, allí es donde revolucionaría la arquitectura americana, construyendo bóvedas tabicadas, propias de la arquitectura tradicional catalana y valenciana, conformadas por la aproximación de hiladas, en la mayoría de casos, de ladrillo. Allí desarrollaría su arquitectura, reinventando las premisas de la arquitectura americana, incluyendo aspectos de la arquitectura tradicional española y planteándola en los nuevos espacios públicos que la sociedad americana del momento estaba demandando. Este sistema de abovedamiento lo patentaría como Guastavino system y es así como surgió su empresa: Guastavino Fireproof Construction Company, en ella desarrollaría el proyecto de la Biblioteca Pública de Boston, el Museo Americano de Historia Natural en Central Park, la iglesia de Saint Bartholomew en la 5ª Av., el Ayuntamiento de NY, la decoración de estaciones de metro de NY, de salas de la Universidad de Harvard, Yale o Columbia, así como del Metropolitan de NY.

They develop their architecture, reinventing the premises of American architecture, including aspects of traditional Spanish architecture in new public spaces that American society was demanding. This system would patent it as Guastavino vaulting system and this is how did in their company: Guastavino Fireproof Construction Company.
