MENIL COLLECTION º RENZO PIANO

13.10.13

Good morning! Monday again! ... and if you want to start the day and the week with good cheer, you have this post! I hope to accompany you in your breakfast and we're equally essential that toast, jam and coffee. Today we virtually travel to Houston to visit the Menil Collection, a private museum founded by oil barons, John and Dominique de Menil, whose building, erected between 1982 and 1986, was built by the Genoese Renzo Piano, winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1998.

The  Menil art collection has more than 10,000 works ranging from trival African art, Byzantine, medieval to more contemporary art. Painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, among other techniques. Over 2,800 m2 spread across galleries, parks, a library, a study hall, and agencies that they will join the coming years, as the Menil Collection is expanding. In this year, 2013, it has signed an agreement with the landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh and David Chipperfield for new buildings will be built to house more pieces of art, additional green spaces, walkways and new facilities for visitors.

The Menil Collection is the result of the purchase of bungalow-style homes in the 60's, which painted their grey facades, giving rise to the so-called ''Menil grey'' a unified aesthetic that stands out even more with the building's own museum. These homes, most still standing, sheltering the museum offices and nonprofit foundations.
The building designed by Renzo Piano is formal and aesthetic lines of houses, its horizontality, the already mentioned ''Menil grey'' colored building and porches that would welcome visitors. Steel and glass complement the work.
The building has a courtyard occupied by a tropical garden around which the gallery opens and receives natural light, but certainly, what stands out is the cover, a modular structure composed of iron and cement which modulates the light, as harmful in the artwork and reduces heat. The cover acts as a filter, setting a temperature and light controlled inside the building as well as in itself constitute a conservation system.

Finally, make a reference to the curating of the Menil Collection. White walls, minimalism to power, clarifying formula space, eliminating the decorative elements that could contaminate or cause confusion in the speech. This option has already been initiated by Alfred Barr, MoMA's first director in the 40's, making that museum on the museum model to follow, where raw contemplation of the artwork is above any kind of experience.

The architecture is an artistic craft, but at the same time is also a scientific profession, this is precisely the distinctiveness.
